“On Tuesday August 23, 1977, as I pulled out of a parking lot in High Point, North Carolina, with no apparent cause a white placard ten inches by sixteen inches blew over the hood of my car and up my windshield.
“After driving two blocks and not seeing the paper blow off the back of my car, I reached out of the window onto the luggage rack above to find it hung there. Upon bringing it into the car, I recognized it immediately as a piece of art, the reverse side [the side I had not originally seen] being silver with red and black inking.
The piece is displayed here.” sketchbook entry, August 1977
“Art exists with or without the intervention of human beings. Artists are either dropped into it or are able to seek it out… It is up to me to recognize it as a piece of art and to follow it through to its synthesis.” sketchbook entry, March, 1978
